Students must attend one theatre production over the course of the class: this production may be performed anywhere that you can get to easily – a production at a nearby college or university, or any professional or community theatre production in Kansas City, Ottawa, Chanute, Topeka, etc. My only stipulation is that it IS a piece of theatre (concerts, stand-up comedy, or opera do not count I’m afraid); it must be a play or a musical. You are required to write a 2-3 page reflection on the performance. The review will specifically explore the performances of the actors, how the piece was approached by the director, the playwriting, the design (set, costume, lighting, sound, makeup), and any other observations you wish to make regarding the production. Tell me what kind of impact did a live performance of this piece have on you, and why? Words of wisdom: do not wait until the last minute to purchase a ticket and then find yourself unable to get one because the performances are sold out. Here are some links to theatre companies which have performances taking place around Kansas (review their website to find out dates to performances and ticket information). Bear in mind this is just a sample of what’s taking place, and does not include every theatre in the area. If you would like to attend a production at a theatre which is not listed below, that’s fine, just be sure to attend a full theatre production (not a reading, or a dress rehearsal, etc.). If you’re not sure, email me with the information and I’ll take a look. And be sure to ask if you can get a student-discounted ticket to save yourself some $$.
